The market held at Great Harwood dates back to the fourteenth century to a charter granted to the Lord of the Manor by Edward III. The small twenty-five stall market is situated on the square at the centre of the town beneath the Mercer Memorial.

There has been an official outdoor market in Haslingden since 1676. King Charles II granted the right to charge tolls and stallage in the Haslingden market place. This right was given to the Duke of Albermarle for services rendered to the County. In June 1998 the market was moved to its present site, completely refurbished in stone and slate, providing 12 purpose built units and 20 covered stalls presenting a wide range or produce.

A traditional market town, Ormskirk combines both ancient and modern. The Parish Church, dating back to the 12th century is steeped in history and, unusually, has both a spire and a tower. Together with the picturesque open air market it gives Ormskirk a traditional 'olde worlde' charm. The Market was established in 1286 when King Edward I granted a Royal Charter to the monks of Burscough Priory to hold a weekly market in Ormskirk. On Thursdays and Saturdays, the traditional market transforms Ormskirk into a hive of activity. There are over 130 stalls selling everything - a massive range of goods from crockery to clothes, attracting shoppers from far and wide.

The original market charter was granted to Preston by Henry II in 1179 (this was followed by 12 more up to the reign of Charles II in 1685). The advancement of retailing to satisfy the modern day shopper, along with the advancement of good hygiene standards required a modern market complex. A Market Hall was built in 1972 which accommodates 780 units in possibly the best food hall in the area, plus a further 50 units which offer a miscellany of dry goods. Also incorporated is an 8 storey car park and shop units. Under the magnificent listed building the outside market with 157 stalls trades on four days a week offering every conceivable item. The market days have been extended to include a Car Boot/Collectors Market on Tuesday and Thursday so that the whole of the markets complex is used for shopping and trading six days every working week.

The selling of produce from stalls has taken place since 1855 at Tup Bridge, where the Market hall now stands in true Victorian splendour. Rawtenstall suffered a catastrophe when, on the 26 February 1946, eight shops which formed part of the market hall were destroyed by fire. There is now a market hall and outdoor market on the site which provides a wealth of produce which any supermarket would be proud of.
