This is an English Heritage castle and is a ruined stronghold which dates back to around 1220. It was built by the Earl Ranuf of Chester and is set on a steep hill and gives spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

Castle Park Road, Lancaster
Open: Lancaster Castle is still used as both a Crown Court and a Prison. While HMP Lancaster Castle is, of course, not open to the public at all, it is still possible to see a good portion of the building, and learn about its long and fascinating history, by joining one of our guided tours of the remainder. Open 7 days a week (except Christmas and New Year) from 10am to 5pm, with tours operating between 10:30 am and 4:00 pm.

This imposing fortress was the setting for the imprisonment and trial of the Pendle Witches. Guided tours are available of the vaulted Shire Hall, The Drop Room, Hadrians Tower, Dungeons, The Grand Jury Toom and Courts. The Castle is still used as a prison and a court that may necessitate changes to their openings (telephone for up to date information). A free guide for an external tour of the castle is available from Lancaster Tourist Information Centre.

Skipton is one of the best-preserved and most complete mediaeval castles in England, despite enduring a three year siege in the Civil War, and is over 900 years old.
